Air-Conditioned Nightmare

Downtown, Boston, Massachusetts; October 10, 2026

Everyday Day 3

Black-and-white photograph looking up at the stepped upper floors of a brick Art Deco high-rise against a plain gray sky. Tall, narrow multi-pane windows run in vertical columns, and window air conditioners project from many of them, each casting a long diagonal shadow onto the sunlit brick. Small carved ornaments sit between the window columns, and the setbacks are topped with tooth-like cornice detailing. The right side of the building is in deep shade.
A series of window air-conditioning units cast a pattern of shadows across the face of a building in downtown Boston — J. Matthew Buchanan
